Biography

Dr. Sekaggya is an Internal Medicine Physician in the hematology ward of Mulago National Referral, a Research Scientist at the Infectious Diseases Institute, Makerere University College of Health Sciences, and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Internal Medicine at Makerere University. Her primary research interest is in HIV, tuberculosis, and non-malignant hematology. In particular, she has led clinical trials, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacogenomic studies evaluating anticoagulation therapy dosing algorithms, anti-tuberculosis drug dosing, safety, efficacy, and drug-drug interactions. She has led TB case-finding studies involving community health workers and the use of the private sector, particularly private pharmacies for TB screening, diagnosis, and linkage to care in rural and urban Uganda.

Dr. Sekaggya has been involved in projects that evaluate comorbidities in patients with TB including non-communicable diseases like diabetes, thrombosis, and mental health disorders, and evaluating how management of these can be integrated into routine TB service provision. She is a previous EDCP and Fogarty Global health fellow, a current African Academy of Sciences Affiliate, a member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Technical Advisory Group on dosing on TB medicines, WHO Scientific Development Group for Target Product Profiles for TB diagnostics and American Society of Hematology (ASH) Women in hematology working group.
