Debrah Vambe, MD, MPhil, MPH

Debrah is a seasoned professional with 17 years of experience in medical and public health. She obtained her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degrees from the University of Zimbabwe, complemented by an MPhil in HIV/AIDS Management and an MPH in Health Systems and Policy from Stellenbosch and Witwatersrand Universities, respectively. Currently, Debrah serves as the Global TB Program Instructor and Regional Study Manager for the TB GAPS Project, overseeing operations in Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Previously, Debrah spent nearly a decade as the National Programmatic Management of Drug Resistance TB (PMDT) Technical Advisor in Eswatini, where she was instrumental in coordinating and implementing DR-TB activities. Her efforts included leading the decentralization of DR-TB sites, introducing new drugs and shorter regimens, enhancing community DR-TB care, and establishing a clinical advisory committee for the use of TB sequencing to improve outcomes, particularly for patients with mutations missed by current diagnostic techniques.

In her current capacity, Debrah focuses on operational research, innovation, strategic planning, programming, capacity building, health systems strengthening, monitoring and evaluation, screening and diagnostics, supply chain management, treatment cascades, advocacy, and resource mobilization to enhance treatment outcomes. She has presented Eswatini's experiences at national and international conferences and has contributed to publications on new TB medicines, community TB/HIV models of care, laboratory techniques, and shorter TB regimens. Debrah also provides technical assistance to other African countries on TB and DR-TB and is a member of the WHO Guideline Development Group.

Beyond her professional roles, Debrah actively engages in the medical community as a member of the Medical and Dental Association in Eswatini. She also serves on several Technical Working Groups (TWGs) and committees, including the TB TWG, TB/HIV Coordinating Committee, HIV Care and Treatment TWG, Laboratory TWG, Research TWG, PSM TWG, National Patient Safety Committee, National DR-TB Expert Committee, Clinical Advisory Committee, and COVID-19 Case Management and Mortality Audits TWG.
