Benjamin Bavinton, PhD, MPH

Biography

Benjamin Bavinton has been employed at the Kirby Institute within the Faculty of Medicine and Health at UNSW Sydney since 2010. He currently holds the position of Senior Research Fellow and leads the Biobehavioral Prevention Research Group in the HIV Epidemiology and Prevention Program.

His research focuses on studying the behavioral and epidemiological aspects of HIV prevention among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, as well as transgender women in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. With 20 years of experience in HIV prevention, he has been involved in community education, policy development, capacity building, and research nationally and internationally. Notably, he served as the Project Leader for the Opposites Attract Study, an international cohort study investigating HIV treatment-as-prevention in male serodiscordant couples.

His current projects involve monitoring and implementing oral and injectable forms of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in Australia and Asia, identifying gaps in HIV prevention efforts in Australia, and understanding the sexual behavior of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, as well as transgender women in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
