The Conference on Liver Disease in Africa (COLDA) 2021 took place as a highly successful virtual conference from 9-11 September. If you would like to watch the recordings from the conference, please go ahead and register to enter the virtual conference portal.

Organized by the SHARE Global Health Foundation in close collaboration with regional societies, COLDA 2021 aimed at empowering healthcare professionals (HCPs) to diagnose, prevent, treat, and achieve a cure for liver diseases for the benefit of patients in Africa. As this was the 4th COLDA, we continue to cultivate a platform that provides a unique opportunity for clinicians, researchers, policymakers, industry representatives, and other healthcare professionals in the African region. Together with the support from an international community of experts, they exchanged knowledge on the latest developments and achievements in the management of viral hepatitis and liver disease with a special focus on the African context.
This highly scientific and educational abstract-driven conference consisted of keynote speeches, state-of-the-art lectures, oral and poster abstract presentations, roundtable discussions, and stimulating debates with ample time for discussion.
We are certain that the conference will act as a catalyst for translating science into clinical practice while promoting medical education in the field of hepatology and setting up collaborations within the African region. Everyone had an exceptional opportunity to share and acquire knowledge, as well as experience a wide spectrum of topics related to liver disease.

Meeting Objectives
COLDA aims to:
- Gather experts from the African region involved in the research, diagnosis, and treatment of liver diseases in an interactive conference setting;
- Discuss the diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventative efforts of liver disease tailored to regional and local needs, translating best practices into daily practice guidelines and policies;
- Contribute towards hepatitis elimination efforts;
- Leverage on the findings from international studies through the delivery of updates from major meetings that can be applied at the local and regional level to combat liver diseases;
- Facilitate a robust dialogue among participants through interactive networking and a networking reception; and
- Foster new and lasting interdisciplinary partnerships and collaborations among various researchers to improve knowledge sharing with aim of combating liver diseases in Africa.

Learning Objectives
After participating in COLDA, participants will be able to:

- Ensure the knowledge and availability of HBV and HCV therapy and their correct usage;
- Discuss evolving modalities of monitoring liver disease and their availability in the African setting; and
- Update on new developments in the investigation of liver disease and their use in an African setting.

COLDA strongly believes in the value of featuring Young Investigators and professionals to ensure broad and inclusive capacity building. This year's program provides an opportunity for you to share your data by submitting a Case Presentation.
Case Presentation Topics Include:

The registration fee will be waived for all case presenters that qualify as Young Investigators.
How to submit your case presentation?
Please submit your case presentation through the case presentation portal using one of the three forms below:
- HBV, Adult Case
- HBV, Adult Pregnant Case
- HCV Case
Registration
The registration fee will be waived for all case presenters that qualify as Young Investigators.
To be eligible as a young investigator, one should be:
- 35 years of age or younger, and
- either be a current Master/PhD student or have obtained an MD/PharmD/PhD degree in the last five years.
An application form (can be found on the Registration page) needs to be completed by a supervisor and received by the Virology Education secretariat at least two weeks prior to the start of the conference. Virology Education will contact the young investigator with instructions regarding the registration procedure.
To be eligible as a young investigator, one should be:

The SHARE Global Health Foundation (hereinafter “SHARE”) is the Meeting Organizer of COLDA 2021. Virology Education BV, the Conference Secretariat, (hereinafter “VE”) will be handling the case submission process for COLDA 2021. Both SHARE and VE may be collectively referred to as “Parties”.
By submitting a case presentation, the submitter hereby agrees to the following terms and conditions.
a) Errors
VE cannot be held responsible for any typing, spelling, or language errors in the submitted case submission(s).
b) Case submission topic
The Organizing Committee of COLDA 2021 may decide to allocate the submitted case submission to a different topic than the topic for which it was submitted.
c) Case submission consent
By submitting a case submission, the submitter agrees that they have received the consent of their co-submitters to do so.
d) Case submission presenter attendance
At least one listed submitter of each accepted case submission must register (paying the relevant registration fee) and attend the meeting to present the case submission.
e) Final decision on case submission status
The Organizing Committee’s decision on the case presentation is final and no further correspondence on the status of the case submission will be entered into.
f) Copyright and publication
The case submitter grants the Parties a non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free license to use, reproduce, distribute, broadcast, and rebroadcast their case presentation. The case presentation will be made available for viewing on www.academicmedicaleducation.com and other webpages owned and/or operated by the Parties. This license may or may not be used for commercial gain. This permission/license is granted to Parties free of charge. VE shall be under no obligation to pay for this permission/license. This license does not change the fact that the case submitter(s) retain copyright ownership of their presentation.
The case submitter is responsible for adequately displaying appropriate copyright notices on any and all of their materials which is to be submitted to VE. The case submitter agrees and understand that VE takes no responsibility for registering any copyright on behalf of them. Case submitters hereby accept and confirm that their case presentation contains no text for reference that is either directly or indirectly defamatory, or is otherwise unlawful, invades individual privacy, or infringes on any proprietary right or statutory copyright. By submitting a case presentation to VE, submitters affirm that their case presentation is their own original work or that they have obtained permission at their own expense from the copyright holder (of any and all data and/or text) for publication and will submit signed documentation showing permission for use to VE at the time of submission of the case presentation.
g) Withdrawal policy
If the case submission presenter wishes to withdraw their case submission, they must do so at least 6 weeks before the conference dates.
h) Communications
All communications regarding this case submission will be directed to the submitter. It is the responsibility of the submitter to inform the co-submitters of the case submission acceptance status.
i) Indemnification
Case submitters agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Parties, their agents and representatives should the material presented or provided for publication be determined to defame, libel, or slander an individual or organization, violate the confidentiality of any individual or organization, or infringe on another's copyright.

Selection
A number of case presentations will be selected to be included in the program. The presenters of these cases will be asked to present their cases and engage in a short discussion.

The members of Scientific Committee are hand-picked by the Organizing Committee and the conference secretariat based on their significant contributions and commitment to the field. In addition, members of the Scientific Committee participate in reviewing submitted abstracts, and play an active role during the workshop as moderators and/or chairs of sessions.

SHARE Global Health Foundation, with support from the industry, is offering scholarships to attend COLDA 2021. The scholarship covers registration and/or a data bundle.
The scholarships are supported by industry. These companies will have no control, influence, or involvement in the selection of any attendees.
The scholarship application deadline was Friday, 25 June 2021, at 23:59 CEST/SAST/CAT.
Scholarship Providers
What is Expected from the Scholarship Recipients?
All scholarship awardees are required to attend the full conference. Awardees must sign in at the beginning of each meeting day and sign off at the end of each day as requested by the Conference Organizer. At the close of the conference, awardees must have completed the daily and overall conference evaluations.
Recipient will provide post-conference feedback and a summary about his/her conference experience within one month after the end of the conference. The feedback questionnaire will be an online survey with the recipient providing feedback on their experience at the conference, scholarship procedure, and how they will implement the knowledge acquired at the conference in their daily practice. The questionnaire will be sent to each recipient by email within one week after the conclusion of the conference.

The applicant will be asked to submit a motivational letter (max. 200 words) describing how their patients/research/community will benefit from the knowledge gained at this meeting, and their knowledge dissemination strategy, a CV, and a letter of recommendation (optional).

- All applications will be reviewed by an independent Scholarship Review Committee.
- All applicants will be notified about the status of their application no later than 21 July.
- Successful applicants will be sent a scholarship agreement.
- After receipt of the signed scholarship agreement, successful applicants will receive instructions for logistical arrangements.
- All applications will be acknowledged upon receipt.
- All applications will be reviewed by an independent Scholarship Review Committee.
- All applicants will be notified about the status of their application no later than 21 July.
