Eamonn Murphy leads UNAIDS’ efforts in promoting an expanded and integrated United Nations system response to HIV for the Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe and Central Asia regions. His team supports countries across the regions in achieving the goals outlined in the United Nations Political Declaration on Ending AIDS, and the implementation of the Global AIDS Strategy. His role includes providing strategic direction, advocacy, coordination, and technical support needed to catalyse and connect leadership from governments, communities, and key partners to deliver life-saving HIV services.
Formerly, Mr. Murphy was the UNAIDS Regional Director for Asia Pacific as well as UNAIDS Country Director in Myanmar and Viet Nam. He also served as UNAIDS’ Director of Governance, United Nations System and Donor Relations at UNAIDS in Geneva.
Before joining the UN in 2002, Mr. Murphy held several senior positions with the Australian Government, including Director for Health Sectors with AusAID in the Foreign Ministry, Head of the Communicable Diseases and Environmental Health Branch, and Director of the National AIDS Programme for the Commonwealth Health Department.
