5 Key Messages from VII Workshop 2022
  1. Acute and chronic effects of viral diseases often involve immune-mediated responses, including inflammation, immune activation, and autoimmunity. Therapeutic interventions must often target both ends of the virus-immune system spectrum.
  2. Statins reduce severe cardiovascular events in people with HIV, even in individuals with low baseline cardiovascular risk.
  3. Long-COVID immunopathogenesis is complex but its understanding is advancing rapidly. The consequences of immune-mediated damage in long COVID share similarities (and differences) with other post-viral diseases like Ebola and MF/CFS
  4. Viruses can also trigger autoimmunity. Epstein-Barr Virus is tightly linked with the onset of Multiple Sclerosis through several autoimmune mechanisms. Viral encephalitis also often has an autoimmune background
  5. Immune therapies targeting the inflammasome or virus-specific CAR-T cells, among others, are advancing towards the cure of different acute and chronic viral diseases

Overview
Thank you

We are pleased to look back on a very successful 2nd edition of the Viral Infections & Inflammation Workshop 2023, held from 6 - 7 September in Rockville, Maryland, USA.

The Organizing Committee and organizers would like to thank the speakers, chairs, and all participants for their contribution to this meeting! Special thanks to the workshop support: ViiV Healthcare and Merck. Without their contribution, this workshop would not have been made possible.

About this Program

The Viral Infections & Inflammation Workshop 2023 brought together basic, translational, and clinical researchers to disseminate the latest knowledge in this area and fuel discussion on the many remaining unknowns in order to catalyze future research.

Inflammatory response and cytokine storm in severely ill COVID-19 patients have put a spotlight on the importance of inflammation in viral infections. Prevalence of long-term COVID is also a concern and potentially related to the suboptimal function of the immune system. Yet, these concerns are not unique to COVID-19. In the case of HIV for instance, despite remarkable improvements in antiretroviral therapy, immune reconstitution remains limited in some patients even a long time after treatment initiation. Exhaustion of primary immune resources due to persistent activation and inflammation drives premature immune aging and impacts life expectancy.

Although HIV and SARS-CoV-2 are fundamentally different infections with distinct long-term consequences, underlying mechanisms that drive those complications might be common. Common underlying mechanisms imply the possibility to employ similar therapeutic interventions. For instance neutralizing antibodies, antiviral drugs, and therapeutic vaccines to eliminate the persistent virus or anti-inflammatory drugs to ameliorate chronic inflammation.

General Information
Who Should Attend?
- Infectiologists;
- (Clinical) virologists;
- Immunologists;
- Microbiologists; and
- Researchers
Meeting Objectives
This meeting aims to:

-Provide a global platform to exchange knowledge across different disciplines involved in research on mechanisms of virus-mediated inflammation;
- Gather basic, translational, and clinical researchers to stimulate discussion on remaining unknowns;
- Translate the data into clinical guidance; and
- Increase the visibility of junior investigators and their research thereby facilitating a generation of future leaders in the field.
Learning Objectives
After participating in this activity, participants will be able to:

- Increase understanding of mechanisms underlying persistent inflammation in viral diseases;
- Outline clinical studies aimed at determining molecular, cellular, and immunological mechanisms of virus-related diseases; and
-Understand clinical data evaluating the potential therapeutic interventions.
