Biography

Prof. Abate Bane Shewaye is a Professor of Medicine and Consultant Internist, Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at Addis Ababa University (AAU) School of Medicine and Adera Hospital, Ethiopia. He earned his medical degree and postgraduate training in Internal Medicine from AAU and completed his subspecialty training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Leipzig University, Germany. With more than 25 years of experience in clinical practice, medical education, research, gastroenterology, and hepatology, Prof. Abate is also an accomplished researcher and has authored and co-authored more than 100 scientific publications in gastroenterology, hepatology, liver diseases, and related fields.

He has made significant contributions to the development of gastroenterology and endoscopy services in Ethiopia. He has served as Head of the Department of Internal Medicine and Head of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Unit at AAU. He was the Founder and Director of the Addis Ababa World Gastroenterology Organization Endoscopy Training Center and contributed to the development of a subspecialty curriculum in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He is a founding member and former President of the Ethiopian Gastroenterology Association and has held leadership roles in national and international professional organizations. He has received several professional honors, including the Ethiopian Ministry of Health Award for Excellence in Medical Education and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ethiopian Gastroenterology Association.
