Biography

Don Mudzengi is a health economist and public health researcher with over 15 years’ expertise in TB, HIV, economic evaluation, implementation science, digital health, and clinical trials. His work focuses on how economic evidence can inform decisions about designing, delivering, and funding public health interventions in low- and middle-income countries. He has conducted cost-effectiveness analyses, decision modelling, patient-cost studies, implementation costing, and economic evaluations of diagnostics, treatment pathways, and service models. His projects have spanned South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Lesotho, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe, often involving multidisciplinary teams and international partners. Don has contributed significantly to TB economic evidence on TB in South Africa, pioneering research into the costs faced by TB patients and their households when seeking care. This research supported South Africa’s National TB Patient Costing Survey and provided broader insights into catastrophic costs, resource limitations, and TB service delivery. He has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and has co-chaired the South African TB Think Tank’s Epidemiology, Modelling, and Health Economics Task Team. Additionally, his experience includes senior leadership roles in multi-country TB clinical trials, including evaluating shorter TB treatment regimens that combine antimicrobial therapy with host-directed treatments.
