Biography

Dr Johnblack K. Kabukye is a Medical Doctor and Health Informatics Researcher with dual expertise in clinical oncology and digital health. He holds an MBBS from Makerere University, a Master's in Health Informatics from the Karolinska Institute and Stockholm University, and a PhD in Medical Informatics from the University of Amsterdam. Johblack is currently based at SPIDER (The Swedish Program for ICT in Developing Regions) at Stockholm University’s Department of Computer and Systems Sciences. He previously worked as a medical doctor at the Uganda Cancer Institute, and continues to be affiliated with the UCI, where most of his digital health research is implemented. He leads research at the intersection of mobile health, health information systems, artificial intelligence, and cancer care in low-resource settings. Specifically, he has led projects to implement smartphone-based telemedicine and AI (automated visual evaluation) in VIA for cervical cancer screening, as well as automated telephone systems based on interactive voice response (IVR) technology for patient engagement, cancer awareness, and tracking of patient-reported outcomes in Uganda. Johnblack also mentors early-career researchers in implementation science and digital health, teaches and supervises master's and PhD students at Makerere University (Uganda), KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), and MIT Manipal (India), and is on the editorial board for the ASCO Journal JCO Clinical Cancer Informatics.
