Biography

Prof Refilwe Phaswana-Mafuya is the Deputy Vice Chancellor: Research and Innovation at the University of Johannesburg. She is an Epidemiologist/Public Health Scientist (MA(SW), PGD (Epi), MSc (Epi), PhD) trained at University of Limpopo and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She is the former Director of the SAMRC/UJ Extramural Unit, the Pan African Centre for Epidemics Research (PACER). She is also Research Associate at Arnold School of Public Health, University of South Carolina and an MSc Reproductive Biology and Reproductive Health Lecturer at the Pan African University of Life and Earth Sciences Institute, African Union. Prof Phaswana-Mafuya is also a Queen Mother for Research and Development in the Abeadze Dominase Kingdom, Central Region, Ghana. Preceding this, Prof Phaswana-Mafuya was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation at the North-West University, acting Executive Director, Research Director, HAST Research Programme, HSRC; Editor-in-Chief and Executive Editor of SAHARA J. Prof Phaswana-Mafuya has worked to better understand the epidemiology of HIV prevention and treatment continuums in SA and SSA for >20 years and was awarded the NSTF TW Nkambule Award in 2017 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to SET, 15 years after obtaining her PhD. Prof Phaswana-Mafuya is the awardee of the HERS-SA Lifetime Achiever and Trialblazer Awards; member/expert panelist of Dira Sengwe AIDS Conferences; Higher Health Board; ASSAF Council; NRF Board; African Health Research Institute; International Expert Panel on Infectiology; UK’s Medical Research Foundation; African German Research Networks for Health Innovations in SSA; University of Münster "Topical Programs. She is an NRF rated scientist, ASSAF merited scientist, AAS and OWSD fellow.
