Biography
Dr. Ally Olotu is Senior Principal Research Scientist and Director of Science at the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), Tanzania, and a Senior EDCTP Fellow. Internationally recognized for malaria vaccine research and infectious disease epidemiology, he has spent 19 years advancing understanding of malaria epidemiology and immunity in endemic regions.Dr. Olotu has led pivotal studies on the safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy of malaria vaccine candidates, notably the RTS,S/AS01, R21/Matrix-M and irradiated whole sporozoite vaccines. Currently, he directs Phase I and III trials for next-generation malaria vaccines targeting multiple antigens and is establishing capacity for controlled human infection studies in Tanzania.In 2017, he received the MRC African Research Leader fellowship for pioneering RH5 blood-stage malaria vaccine trials in Africa. His recent work includes collaborations with the University of California, San Francisco, evaluating strategies to detect and treat low-density malaria infections in children. Dr. Olotu earned his MD from the University of Dar es Salaam and his DPhil from Oxford for research on RTS,S. He has published extensively and mentored early-career African scientists.
