Asgeir Johannessen

Biography

Asgeir Johannessen is specialist in internal medicine and infectious diseases, and works as Senior Consultant at Vestfold Hospital and Professor of Medicine at the University of Oslo. His main research interest is viral hepatitis, and he has initiated and led several large international trials, including the multicentre Nuc-Stop study which assessed the effect of stopping hepatitis B treatment in selected patients with full viral suppression. He also leads large cohort studies in Ethiopia with more than 10,000 hepatitis B patients, aiming to identify a simplified approach to HBV care and treatment. Johannessen is co-founder and chairman of HEPSANET (Hepatitis B in Africa Collaborative Network), a unique research collaboration in Africa aiming to provide high-quality data on hepatitis B from the continent.
