Atsushi Tanaka

Biography

Prof. Atsushi Tanaka is a Professor at Teikyo University School of Medicine. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo, Japan, and then stayed at the University of California, Davis, from 1996 to 1999 as a visiting scholar with M. Eric Gershwin, M.D., where he elucidated T cell mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis and progression of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC).

His area of expertise is autoimmune liver diseases and viral hepatitis. He has provided outstanding leadership to hepatology in Japan, including ongoing service as Chairman of the Drafting Committee for Hepatitis Management Guidelines of the Japan Society of Hepatology (JSH) and playing a central role in the publication as well as revision of the JSH Guidelines for the Management of HBV/HCV Infection. Currently, he is also the PI of the Intractable Hepatobiliary Disease Study Group supported by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan, and is one of the leaders in autoimmune liver disease research in Japan.

He is a member of the Japan Society of Hepatology, and the AASLD, EASL and APASL. He is an active member of the APASL Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee for AIH and PBC.
