Biography

Dr. Deborah Money is Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She is the first individual in Canada formally trained in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Infectious Diseases. In 2005, she became the inaugural Executive Director of the UBC-affiliated Women’s Health Research Institute at BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre.

A clinician-scientist specializing in Reproductive Infectious Diseases, Dr. Money leads large multicenter research programs focused on the maternal/infant microbiome, HIV in pregnancy, and HPV vaccination in women living with HIV. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, she pivoted her research to lead three major pan-Canadian studies on the impact of COVID-19 on pregnant women and infants and contributed to the Government of Canada’s COVID-19 Immunity Task Force. Her current research includes addressing syphilis in pregnancy. Internationally, she is Past Chair of the Infections in Pregnancy Committee for the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO).

Dr. Money has held several leadership roles within UBC’s Faculty of Medicine, including Executive Vice Dean (2016–2021) and, in 2023, becoming the first woman appointed Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles and is recognized as a dedicated teacher, mentor, and research team builder.

Her contributions to women’s health have earned numerous honors, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Infectious Diseases Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (2019), Fellowship in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (2023), and appointment as a Member of the Order of Canada in December 2023.
