Professor Dimie Ogoina is a distinguished physician-scientist specializing in infectious diseases and currently serves as Vice Chancellor at Bayelsa Medical University, Nigeria. With 24 years of clinical practice and 15 years focused on infectious diseases, he is recognized internationally for his pivotal research on mpox (monkeypox). His contributions have earned him placements in Nature’s Top 10 Scientists (2022), TIME 100 Most Influential People (2023), and recognition as one of the top 2% most cited researchers worldwide (2021–2025).
Professor Ogoina has chaired the WHO International Health Regulations Emergency Committee on Mpox and participated in multiple WHO advisory groups. He holds fellowships with FIDSA and FACP, as well as certifications from Harvard Medical School and NHS UK. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals including The Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, and Nature Medicine, with more than 5,996 citations and an h-index of 32. He has also delivered over 40 keynote addresses, most on the re-emerging mpox outbreak.
His leadership spans managing a Nigeria tertiary teaching hospital, directing Nigeria’s COVID-19 response, securing international research grants, co-chairing clinical trials, patenting medical devices, and advancing digital health and mentorship in medical education.
