Biography

Eamonn Murphy leads UNAIDS’ work across Asia and the Pacific and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. He provides strategic leadership and high-level advocacy, working with governments, communities, the United Nations system and development partners to shape and advance the HIV response across both regions.

Mr Murphy has held senior leadership positions across UNAIDS at global, regional and country levels, including Director of Governance, United Nations System and Donor Relations; and Country Director in Myanmar and Viet Nam. In these roles, he supported countries to expand HIV services, strengthen partnerships and address policy and legislative barriers. In 2010, he was awarded the Order of Friendship by the President of Viet Nam in recognition of his contribution to the country.

Before joining the United Nations in 2002, Mr Murphy held several senior positions with the Australian Government, including Director for Health Sectors with AusAID, Head of the Communicable Diseases and Environmental Health Branch, and Director of the National AIDS Programme.
