Biography

Ebba Abate (PhD) is a biomedical expert who has got his PhD degree in Medical Microbiology in June 2013 from Linkoping University, Sweden. He worked at the University of Gondar for close to 18 years and serving the University at different positions. Since 2017 Dr. Abate has been appointed by the Ethiopian government of Ethiopia to serve as Director General of the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) which is the most influential public health research institute in Ethiopia. Since he joins the EPHI he has made structural and functional transformation of the institute to play significant roles in the areas of public health emergency management, national laboratory system building and evidence generation system at the institute. Dr. Abate and his team have established the National Data Management Center at EPHI aiming to generate evidence supporting decision making process in Ethiopia. Dr. Abate has produced more than 40 publications in peer reviewed journals and led several administrative and academic tasks with full devotion and commitment. He won the Tore-Godal prize given on yearly basis for outstanding young researchers in Ethiopia and received the prize from the then Minster of the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia and the current DG of WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom. Dr. Abate has also received different awards (Gold medal, best student award, best researcher award and certificates of recognitions) from different institutions. He has got different research grants from WHO, EDCTP, Swedish Research counsel, Heart and Lung Foundation, University of Gondar, AHRI, SIDA/SAREC, etc.
