Federico García has been the Head of the Department of Microbiology at the San Cecilio University Hospital in Granada, Spain since 2009. He also serves as an Invited Professor of Masters Degree at the University of Granada, where he also received his PhD. Dr García’s primary research interests include hepatitis B/C/D, the transmission of HIV drug resistance in Spain and Europe, and the clinical significance of low- and very low-level HIV viraemia. He also led the implementation of HCV reflex testing across Spain. Currently, his research is focused on new diagnostic strategies to expand HIV diagnosis and avoid late presentation, as well as access to new diagnostic strategies for HCV elimination and for HBV and HDV diagnosis and linkage to care. Dr García is a former SEIMC President and the Director of the Andalusian Plan for HIV Elimination. He also contributes to the national Spanish Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination and coordinates the Spanish HIV Research Network Package on subtypes and resistance in collaboration with other European organisations. Dr García is also a past President of the SEIMC Spanish Viral Hepatitis Study Group and was previously Coordinator of the Spanish national cohort on HCV resistance to new direct-acting antivirals. He has authored or co-authored numerous scientific publications that have featured in peer-reviewed journals, including The Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Clinical Infectious Diseases and the Journal of Hepatology.
