Biography

Dr Gabriela Cromhout is a clinician-researcher based in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, dedicated to paediatric HIV cure research and the psychosocial and ethical dimensions of trial participation. She holds an MBChB from Stellenbosch University, an MSc from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (Chevening Scholar), and a PhD in Paediatrics and Child Health from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. As a clinician-researcher and Clinical Co-ordinator of the Ucwaningo Lwabantwana Cohort at UKZN — a study following over 350 mother-child pairs living with HIV from birth— her clinical and academic work is centred on HIV cure, including analytical treatment interruption trials in children living with HIV. She is a member of the Paediatric HIV Cure Target Product Profile Steering Committee and holds the SANTHE Path-to-Independence Grant. In 2025, she was named to the Mail & Guardian's 200 Young South Africans, recognised as one of the country's most exceptional emerging leaders 35 and under.
