Biography

Dr. Gustavo Pinto is an infectious disease specialist. He has been dedicated to HIV patients and science since 1998. He attended the Residency, Master's (MSc) and Doctorate (PhD) programs in infectious diseases. In his doctoral dissertation, he studied the incidence of HIV, viral subtypes and antiretroviral transmitted resistance in recently infected patients in Brazil.

He's been an Assistant Professor of Infectious Diseases at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) since 2018 and an Associate Professor at the University of Southern Santa Catarina (UNISUL) since 2007. In both universities he maintains academic activities with undergraduate and graduate students. At UFSC, he is also the coordinator of the exchange program for international medical students.

He is consultant for HIV resistance as a member of the Brazilian Genotyping Network (RENAGENO). He is also member of the Technical Advisory Committee on Antiretroviral Therapy of the Brazilian AIDS Program, Ministry of Health. This board produces the national guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of HIV and opportunistic infections.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Pinto was one of the investigators of the WHO Solidarity Trials Consortium and the Recover-SUS Brazil. Both studies produced articles published in the New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet.
