Drug-Resistant Coordinator
Dr Happiness Mvungi is a senior medical doctor, research scientist and expert in Drug Resistant Tuberculosis with 13 years of extensive experience in TB care, implementation science and health system strengthening. She currently serves as the Drug-Resistant Coordinator at Kibong’oto Infectious Diseases Hospital where she plays a pivotal role in strengthening clinical management and program implementation for DR TB across Tanzania. In additional to her institutional responsibilities, at the national level she plays a key role in advancing programmatic Management of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis, providing technical leadership, mentorship and guidance to health care workers across Tanzania. Her work has significantly contributed to improving the quality of DR TB care and treatment outcomes.
She has been instrumental in advancing patient centered TB care notably leading the transition from the conventional 18-month treatment regimen to a shorter 9 month, all oral regimen for Rifampicin resistant and Multidrug resistant TB (RR/MDR TB). Currently she is spearheading the national rollout of BPaLM regimen a novel shorter treatment approach that is transforming DR TB management in Tanzania.
A recognized leader in her field, she is a member of TB Technical Working Group in the country and a member of Global TB Technical Experts Council where she contributes to global policy development and evidence-based guidelines. Her work reflects a strong commitment to innovation, research and improving public health outcomes, positioning her as a key figure in the fight against TB both nationally and globally.
