Biography

Dr Katherine Gill is a physician and clinical researcher with expertise in HIV prevention, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), adolescent health, and sexual and reproductive health. She joined Population Council in 2026 as a Medical Monitor, supporting the design, implementation, and medical oversight of international clinical research focused on HIV prevention and sexual and reproductive health.

Before joining Population Council, Dr Gill spent 15 years at the Desmond Tutu Health Foundation in Cape Town, South Africa, where she led a portfolio of HIV prevention, STI, and adolescent health research. She has served as Principal Investigator on multiple international clinical trials, with a particular focus on biomedical HIV prevention, vaginal health, and improving access to sexual and reproductive healthcare for adolescents and young women.

Dr Gill is Protocol Chair of HPTN 119, an international multicentre trial evaluating weekly doxycycline prophylaxis for STI prevention among young African women. She serves on the Board of the International Society for Sexually Transmitted Diseases Research and is a member of the Expert Advisory Panel of the Medicines Patent Pool, contributing to efforts to expand equitable access to new health technologies.

Dr Gill received her MBChB and Master of Public Health from the University of Cape Town and holds a Diploma in HIV Management from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.
