Biography

Dr. Rao is a physician scientist whose clinical, administrative, and research interests focus on healthcare-associated infections and the gut microbiome. He attended medical school at Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois, and completed both his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Michigan.

He is the Director of Research for the University of Michigan Division of Infectious Diseases, and his research aims to use biomarkers and statistical modeling to better understand disease processes and predict clinical outcomes. His funding sources have included the NIH, CDC, industry, and non-profit foundations. He leads interdisciplinary teams that study C. difficile, multidrug-resistant organisms such as Klebsiella pneumoniae, and the gut microbiome's role in health and disease.
