Biography

Naoya Sakamoto received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from School of Medicine, Tokyo Medical and Dental University in 1987 and 1994, respectively. He then worked as an associate professor at Dept. of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He spent 3 years as a research fellow at Division of Gastroenterology-Hepatology, University of Connecticut Health Center, USA. He has become a professor/chairman at Dept. of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Hokkaido University Graduate School of Medicine in 2012, and currently serving as a distinguished professor of Hokkaido University since 2026.

He is the editorial director Journal of Gastroenterology, a vice editor-in-chief of the Hepatology Research, and an associate editor of the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He has chaired annual meetings of JSH (2021) and JDDW/JSGE (2024). Since 2026 he has served as Director General of JSH.
