Biography
Per Ljungman received his MD from Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1975 and a PhD in virology from the same university in 1985. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Hematology and served as director of the Department of Hematology at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, from 1998 to 2013 and as acting director for the Department of Cellular Therapy and Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation from 2014 to 2017. He is currently an emeritus professor of hematology at Karolinska Institutet.
Per Ljungman’s research interests have been concentrated on infections, in particular viral infections, in allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients and vaccinations of the severely immunocompromised host. He has published extensively with currently more than 450 peer-reviewed publications. He is an honorary member of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation and the Swedish Hematology Association. He has furthermore received a lifetime achievement award from the International Immunocompromised Host Society.
