Hospital Germans Trias & IrsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute, Spain
Roger Paredes Deiros, MD, PhD, is Head of the Infectious Diseases Department at Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol and Principal Investigator of the Microbial Genomics Group at the IrsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute. He received his MD/PhD from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and completed advanced HIV training at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, supported by a “la Caixa” fellowship. His team helped establish the clinical utility of HIV 1 deep sequencing across both high and low income settings and now investigates how the gut microbiome contributes to HIV pathogenesis and chronic inflammation. Since the COVID 19 pandemic, he has served as Spanish National Coordinator for NIH/NIAID therapeutic trials and platforms (ACTT 1/2, ACTIV 3/TICO, STRIVE), helping inform standards of care. Under his leadership, the department delivers highly specialised clinical and translational programmes spanning HIV (including cure-oriented goals), sexually transmitted infections, infections in immunocompromised patients, and severe bacterial infections including bone and joint and cardiovascular infections. It also hosts the largest Long COVID unit in Spain. He contributes to WHO HIV drug-resistance and treatment guidelines, is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University, and serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Infectious Diseases.
