Biography
Dr. Sook-Hyang Jeong is Professor of Gastroenterology at Seoul National University (SNU) College of Medicine, SNU Bundang Hospital.
She earned her MD, MSc, and PhD degrees from Seoul National University College of Medicine, completed residency and fellowship at Seoul National University Hospital, and trained as a visiting scientist at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), Liver Disease Branch, where she conducted research on hepatitis C vaccine development under the supervision of Dr. T.J. Liang.
For over 30 years, she has dedicated her career to viral hepatitis, particularly hepatitis C, focusing on prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment strategies.
Professor Jeong has led landmark nationwide multicenter studies on the epidemiology of hepatitis C in Korea, addressing risk factors, clinical features, diagnosis-to-treatment linkage, and disease burden. As principal investigator of the national hepatitis C cohort study, she provided key evidence supporting the introduction of hepatitis C screening in Korea.
In recognition of her advisory role during the 2015 hepatitis C outbreak, she received the Presidential Citation on Health Day in 2019. She also chaired the Korean Association for the Study of the Liver (KASL) guideline committee for hepatitis C treatment.
Currently serving as President of KASL, Professor Jeong continues to lead efforts toward hepatitis elimination and liver health advancement in Korea.
