Biography

William R. Short, MD, MPH, FIDSA is an Associate Professor of Medicine with a secondary appointment in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Hahnemann University. Subsequently he completed an internship, residency, and Chief residency in Internal Medicine followed by an Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the MCP/Hahnemann University.

Dr. Short has been actively engaged in HIV clinical care and research since 2003. He currently serves as Associate Director of Penn’s HIV Adult Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU) and Co-Director of the Clinical Core of Penn’s Center for AIDS Research (CFAR). He maintains two active clinical practices one in the Penn Community Practice and the second in the Helen O. Dickens OB/GYN Clinic, where he is involved in the care of pregnant women living with HIV.

At the national level, Dr. Short serves as a Scientific/Clinical Member of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Panel on Treatment of HIV During Pregnancy and Prevention of Perinatal Transmission, contributing to the Recommendations for the Use of Antiretroviral Drugs During Pregnancy and Interventions to Reduce Perinatal HIV Transmission in the United States. He is also a member of the HIV Primary Care Guidelines Panel and the Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Opportunistic Infections in Adults and Adolescents with HIV. In addition, he serves as an advisor to the Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry (APR), Chair of the American Academy of HIV Medicine (AAHIVM), and Co-Chair of Building Healthy Futures, a working group of City Match supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Short’s research focuses on novel antiretroviral treatment strategies, with particular emphasis on long-acting antiretroviral therapy and the management of HIV during pregnancy.
