Biography

Ahmed Ddungu MB,ChB., MMed. is a clinic physician at the Infectious Diseases Institute-Makerere University (IDI), an HIV Centre of Excellence. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree and Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine from Makerere University. Together with colleagues in the IDI Prevention, Care and Treatment department; they offer ambulatory comprehensive HIV care to over 8500 people living with HIV.  Dr. Ddungu also routinely oversees the urgent care unit, a specialized care unit in the department that caters for patients with advanced HIV and related complications.

Additionally, Dr. Ddungu is an Associate Research fellow at the Makerere University Lung Institute and his areas of research focus include HIV, Tuberculosis(TB) and chronic lung disease. He has published some work in peer reviewed journals on the same. He has keen interest in chronic lung disease attributable to TB (post-TB lung disease) and has undertaken research projects on the same; including a NIH funded Fogarty Fellowship and a ‘TB REACH’ funded project from the STOP-TB partnership. His goal is to build his capacity and develop into an independent clinical researcher with focus on TB, its chronic respiratory complications and chronic lung diseases particularly COPD among people living with HIV.
