Dr. Amanda Castel, a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, has expertise in using public health surveillance data to monitor progress along the HIV care continuum, runs a large observational cohort study of people living with HIV in DC (the DC Cohort), and conducts technology-based interventions aimed at improving HIV testing, engagement in care, and treatment adherence. Dr. Castel is a member of the DC Center for AIDS Research and leads the Ending the HIV Epidemic Scientific Working Group. In addition to her research, she teaches courses on infectious diseases, and is a provider of pediatric HIV care at Children's National Medical Center. Dr. Castel completed medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, pediatrics residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service and Preventive Medicine residency programs. She received her MPH in International Health from Johns Hopkins University and has lived and worked in Sub-Saharan Africa on HIV prevention, care and treatment. She was a consultant on the US National HIV/AIDS Strategy 2020 update, a member of the National Institutes of Health’s AIDS Research Advisory Committee, is the Physician Champion for Washington DC’s Fast Track Cities Initiative, and is a Trustee of the Board of the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care (IAPAC).
