Ana Barroso Abecasis, MD PhD PharmD is an Associate Professor at Institute for Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT), NOVA University of Lisbon. She obtained her PhD in Medical Sciences at the KU Leuven (Belgium, 2009). She is a Medical Doctor (NOVA University of Lisbon, 2014) and has a previous degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences (University of Lisbon, 2002).
She coordinates the research line of Global Pathogen Dispersion & Mobility of Populations at the Global Health and Tropical Medicine Research Center within IHMT-NOVA. She is member of several European networks of global health and viral research, including EUResist, European Society for Translational Antiviral Research, the European Virus Bioinformatics Center and the Global Burden of Disease Collaborators Network. Her research interests include Virology, Antiviral Drug Resistance, Bioinformatics, Evolution and Global Health.
In 2012, received the L’Oreal Portugal FCT Unesco Medal of Honour for Women in Science and, in 2016 and 2017, was awarded for projects within the Gilead Génese program. She’s received several awards for best oral communication and best poster in national and international conferences. She is member of the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Microbiology.
She’s the principal investigador and participant of several national and European projects, including scientific projects and projects for capacity building and public health strengthening in several Portuguese speaking African countries. She was also involved in the development of bioinformatics tools for HIV and viral molecular epidemiology, including the Rega HIV subtyping tool and the Virulign software.
Ana has published around 110 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and 4 book chapters, with an h-index of 29 (Google Scholar).
Ana teaches Evolution, Bioinformatics, Research Methods in Health, Global Health and Health of Vulnerable Population at several Masters and Doctoral Programmes at the IHMT and NOVA University.
