Andy Hoepelman, MD, PhD

Biography

Professor Dr. Andy I.M. Hoepelman is the former Head of the Department of Internal medicine and Infectious Diseases in the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands. Currently he is head of Infectious Diseases. Since August 1st 1998, he is Professor in Medicine.


Dr. Hoepelman received his medical training from the University of Utrecht, receiving his Doctorate in 1978 and his MD degree in 1980. He completed two internships at the University in 1980 and 1985 to earn his board certification as a specialist in Internal Medicine. He received his PhD in 1989. In 1991/1992 he worked at the Rockefeller University, New York (Laboratory Prof. E. Tuomanen) and at the Memorial-Sloan Kettering (Department of Infectious Diseases, Prof.dr. D. Armstrong). In 1993, he was board certified as a specialist in Infectious Diseases.


He also heads the training programme in infectious disease for internal medicine specialists at the University Hospital Utrecht. He was the previous editor-in-chief of the Netherlands Journal of Medicine and editor of the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents, Clinical Microbiology and Infection. Currently he is editor of the Dutch Textbook of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and editor Of Cohen & Powderly’s Infectious Diseases. He is author/co-author of more than 400 published articles and is a member of several professional societies. 


Moreover, he is winner of a bronze medal at the Montreal Olympics in Waterpolo in 1976 and winner of the masters Gold medal (European Championships) in Waterpolo with his team in 2007 (Istanbul), 2009 (Oradea, Romania) and Budapest 2013.


He is a member of the technical Waterpolo committee of LEN since 2021 and of FINA since 2017. He is also member of the FINA COVID-19 task force
