Dr. Antonio Pérez (MD, PhD) is director of the Nutrition and Metabolism Unit and senior consultant in the Endocrinology and Nutrition Department of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona. Spain. He is an associate professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), a member of the CIBER for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases (CIBERDEM) and the Spanish Interdisciplinary Committee for Vascular Prevention (CEIPV). Dr Pérez is President of the Spanish Diabetes Society (SED).
Dr Pérez's main areas of interest, both in clinical and basic research, are related to the pathophysiology, evaluation and treatment of diabetes, dyslipidemia, obesity and their complications, especially in aspects related to the assessment and reduction of cardiovascular risk. As a result of his research, Dr Pérez has supervised 13 doctoral theses, is the co-author of more than 300 publications in research journals, edited several books and book chapters. He received the Spanish Society of Diabetes Foundation Award (José Antonio Hedo) and the Spanish Society of Diabetes Foundation Award (Rodríguez Miñón Award). He is a reviewer of several journals, and is frequently invited to lecture at scientific conferences, such as those on endocrinology, cardiology, internal medicine, arteriosclerosis, or primary care.
