Biography

Prof. Dimie Ogoina is an Infectious Disease Physician at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), Okolobiri, Bayelsa State, Nigeria and a Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Niger Delta University, Amassoma, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. He currently serves as the Chief Medical Director of the NDUTH and the President of the Nigerian Infectious Diseases Society, as well as the Chair of the WHO Emergency Committee in the 2024 Mpox upsurge.

Prof. Ogoina and his team at NDUTH diagnosed and managed the first case of Monkeypox in Nigeria during the 2017 outbreak in Nigeria.  

Prof. Ogoina has held several other clinical leadership and administrative positions including the Chair of Subject Matter Experts for Community of Practice for COVID-19 Case Managers in Nigeria and Deputy Chair, National Health Research Committee, Nigeria.   

His research interests include HIV/AIDS, healthcare-associated infections, infection prevention and control, antimicrobial resistance, and epidemic-prone infectious diseases, among others. He is also interested in clinical governance, quality improvement and applications of technology in medical education. 

Prof. Ogoina was named one of Nature's top 10 scientists in 2022 and in Time's 100 most influential people in 2023, recognizing his work on Mpox and contributions to global equity.
