Dorothy Dow, MD, MSc is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Duke University, Associate Research Professor in the Duke Global Health Institute, and co-director of the Duke Center for AIDS Research Clinical Core. She has lived and worked for over a decade in Moshi, Tanzania and is a co-site leader of the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre-Duke Collaboration. Her research focuses on adolescent populations and the intersection of HIV treatment adherence and mental health.
She co-developed a peer-delivered and group-based mental health intervention called Sauti ya Vijana (The Voice of Youth) with colleagues, Karen O’Donnell, a clinical psychologist, and Tanzanian youth leaders to address common stress and worries to improve the lives of youth living with HIV in Tanzania. Dr. Dow is also co-chair with clinical psychologist, Dr. Geri Donenberg, of clinical trial IMPAACT 2016, a group-based intervention to improve mental health and adherence among youth living with HIV in Southern Africa.
Dr. Dow is a member of the Adolescent HIV Prevention and Treatment Implementation Science Alliance and works closely with and for adolescents to develop and evaluate innovative strategies to address mental health challenges that support youth to thrive into adulthood.
