Biography

Edsel Maurice T. Salvana, MD, DTM&H, FPCP, FIDSA is a Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases and is the Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the National Institutes of Health at the University of the Philippines. He also serves as a Special Adviser for HIV and AIDS to the Secretary of Health. He is adjunct faculty for Global Health at the University of Pittsburgh.

He was chosen as a TED Fellow in 2017 for his work on HIV. He was awarded a Senior TED Fellowship in 2020 for his work on restoring vaccine confidence and improving science communication. He was conferred the Order of Lapulapu, Rank of Magalong by the President of the Philippines for his contributions as a senior government adviser during the COVID-19 pandemic.

His work on HIV molecular epidemiology and diagnostics has won numerous awards, including Innovation of the Year from the Infectious Diseases Society of America Foundation, and the Eduardo Quisumbing Medal from the National Academy of Science and Technology of the Department of Science and Technology. Dr. Salvana writes a weekly column entitled “Clinical Matters” for the Manila Bulletin which offers scientific perspectives on the COVID-19 pandemic and other diseases.
