Eliane Becks Nininahazwe grew up in Burundi during a turbulent period of civil war. She was diagnosed with HIV in 2003. In 2011 she became a Dutch citizen. Since 2015, the year she shared her HIV status with the world, her passion is to make a positive change in the lives of people living with HIV (PLWHIV).
As a woman living with HIV, she dreams of a world where PLWHIV are healthy citizens free from stigma. Fighting inequalities together, we can help them to achieve universal access to health services and empower them to express their needs, break taboos and create a HIV stigma free society.
Her arts-based social impact enterprise, Indonongo, works on two focus areas: 1) Arts for Change whereby she frequently organises performances inspired by her Burundian heritage and, where possible, adress global HIV stigma, and 2) to improve health and promote inclusion of PLWHIV mainly through the persona HIV Stigmafighter. Together with local and global partners, she designs and coordinates various projects to achieve arts-based social impact on these focus areas.
