Florian van Bommel, MD

Biography

Dr. Florian van Bömmel, MD and private lecturer in internal medicine has studied medicine at the University of Hamburg, Germany, and at the University of Nice in France.

Between 2001 and 2009 he performed a clinical internship at the Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin under the supervision of Professor Thomas Berg. Since 2010 he has been working as a specialist for Internal Medicine and Hepatologist at the Section of Hepatology in the Department of Gastroenterology of the University Hospital of Leipzig under the supervision of Professor Joachim Mössner and Professor Thomas Berg.

The main research interests of Dr. van Bömmel are viral hepatitis, drug induced liver injury and the treatment and diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinomas. From 1998 to 2001 he performed a research fellowship at the Department of General Virology at the Heinrich-Pette-Institute in Hamburg under the supervision of Professor Hans Will, where he achieved the degree of a Medical Doctor. Between 2002 and 2010 he has supervised many scientific projects in the research laboratory of the Hepatology Unit of the Charité Hospital Berlin. In 2012 he performed a short term fellow ship at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory in Melbourne under the supervision of Professor Stephen Locarnini.

Since 2001 Dr. van Bömmel has conducted and published numerous studies in the field of Hepatology, among them many on treatment, resistance development and new bio markers of Hepatitis B. He has further participated as investigator in numerous international clinical studies in the field of Hepatology.
