Dr. George Kyei obtained his medical degree from the University of Ghana Medical School. After an internship at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, he served as a family physician for three years at Manna Mission Hospital. While working as a family physician, Dr. Kyei earned an MPhil degree from the University of Ghana, where he characterized mycobacteria isolates causing tuberculosis in HIV and non-HIV-infected patients. He immigrated to the US in 2003 and earned a Ph.D. in molecular genetics/microbiology at the University of New Mexico, working on molecular aspects of HIV/TB interactions in macrophages. Subsequently, Dr. Kyei moved to Washington University in St. Louis, USA, where he completed an Internal Medicine residency, Infectious Diseases fellowship, and postdoctoral studies in HIV pathogenesis. He is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Kyei returned to Ghana in 2018 and joined the University of Ghana’s Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research. The NIH, EDCTP, Expertise France, and others support his research laboratories at Washington University and Noguchi. The laboratories are focused on understanding HIV persistence, characterizing the viral reservoir in African populations, and training African scientists to be proficient in basic HIV science and cure research.
