Gifty Marley is an infectious diseases epidemiologist specialising in HIV/STI prevention, Social Innovation, and designathons. Designathon is a three-stage participatory activity informed by design thinking that includes preparation with end-users, an intensive period of collaboration, and follow-up activities for implementation and research. She is a post-doctoral research fellow with UNC-Project China in Guangzhou. Her team’s ongoing research investigates pay-it-forward to increase the uptake of gonorrhoea and chlamydia testing among male STD patients in Guangdong province, China.
Dr Marley’s interest in social innovation is signified by her role as a Social Innovation in Health Initiative (SIHI) fellow. She has facilitated SIHI capacity-building training workshops and served as a member of the open-call steering committee for the recently launched WHO/TDR Design with and for the Public: A Practical Guide for designathons in Health and Health Research. Her special interest in China, where she has worked on collaborative research for five years, further demonstrates her dedication. The over 40 published manuscripts and receipt of the Gilead Sciences RSP in HIV grant testify to Dr. Marley’s achievements. She received her BSc from the University of Ghana, MSc from Shandong University, and PhD from Nanjing Medical University in Jiangsu province, China.
