Gustavo Duque, MD, PhD, FRACP

Biography

Professor Gustavo Duque is a renowned geriatrician and biomedical scientist specializing in age-related bone loss, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, osteosarcopenia, and frailty in older individuals. He researches the mechanisms, therapies, and biomarkers for these conditions, with a focus on the impact of vitamin D, exercise, and proteins on bone and muscle mass.

After completing his training in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine at Javeriana University and McGill University, respectively, Professor Duque obtained his Ph.D. from McGill in 2003. He joined McGill University Medical School and conducted research at the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research.

In 2007, he moved to Australia and became an Associate Professor and Head of the Division of Geriatric Medicine at Sydney Medical School Nepean - University of Sydney. He later became a Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney and held leadership positions at the University of Melbourne. In 2022, he assumed the roles of Full Professor and Dr. Joseph Kaufmann Chair in Geriatric Medicine at McGill University.

Professor Duque is known for his Falls and Fractures clinics, where comprehensive assessments for fall and fracture risk are conducted. He leads a clinical trials unit evaluating treatments for age-related musculoskeletal diseases. With numerous publications and as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Gerontology: Biological Sciences, he has made significant contributions to aging and musculoskeletal research.
