Jean B. Nachega, MD, PhD, MPH, FRCP, FAAS

Biography

Jean Nachega, MD, PhD, MPH, FRCP, DTM&H, FAAS, is a Professor at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and a tenured Associate Professor of Epidemiology, Infectious Diseases, and Microbiology at the University of Pittsburgh, USA. He also holds adjunct positions at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Nachega graduated Cum Laude from the University of Louvain (UCL), Belgium, specializing in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and tropical medicine, and later completed his MPH and PhD at Johns Hopkins and the University of Cape Town, respectively. With over 30 years of experience in patient care, teaching, and leading infectious disease research in Africa, including HIV, TB, COVID-19, and Mpox, he has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications. In 2022, he received the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care award for his contributions to HIV research and mentorship. Dr. Nachega consults for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, US CDC, Africa CDC, and WHO, and is a member-elect of the Academy of Sciences of South Africa and the African Academy of Sciences.
