John Frater is a Professor of Infectious Diseases at the University of Oxford. He is the scientific lead and co-founder of ‘CHERUB’, an NIHR-supported UK collaboration dedicated to finding a cure for HIV infection. He also works as an Honorary Consultant Physician in HIV and Infectious Diseases, including on the COVID-19 wards in Oxford. For his HIV work, the aim of his research is to understand better the reservoir of ‘latent’ HIV infection in treated individuals, and to pursue strategies for curing HIV infection with a specific interest in primary HIV infection. He is PI on a number of major HIV clinical trials (RIO, RIVER) and, more recently, he has helped lead the Immunology team at the Peter Medawar Building in Oxford, deciphering T cell responses to SARS-CoV-2 after disease and vaccination. He is lead investigator of the first study of COVID vaccination in people with HIV in the UK.
