Dr. Schexnayder is an Assistant Professor and early-stage investigator at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing. Her impressive academic journey includes a PhD from Case Western Reserve University, a DNP from the University of Virginia, and an MPH from the Johns Hopkins University. She is an HIV/AIDS certified advance practice nurse, with over 12 years of experience working with people with HIV in various clinical, administrative, and research capacities. Her research interests largely center on HIV/AIDS and cardiometabolic health, with a particular interest in integrated care strategies to improve management of cardiometabolic risk factors and to promote heart healthy lifestyle changes among people with HIV. Her growing interest in women’s cardiometabolic health stems from work on projects within the VA healthcare system, where she contributed to gender tailoring of a cardiovascular prevention program for women Veterans, and evidence mapping to identify strategies for increasing the representation of women in VA funded clinical trials.
