Kai J. Jonas, PhD

Biography

Kai J. Jonas is a psychologist and holds the chair of Applied Social Psychology in the Department of Work and Social Psychology at Maastricht University, The Netherlands. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care at Chinese University Hong Kong. After studying in Spain (Universitat Valencia), Germany (University of Göttingen), and the United States of America (UC Irvine, UC Berkeley) he did his Phd at Göttingen University and moved for a Post-Doc to University of Jena. After an appointment at the University of Amsterdam, and a visiting professorship at Mahidol University, Thailand, he is working at Maastricht University since 2016.

Kai is contributing to the understanding of why people continue to be at risk for acquiring and transmitting HIV with a specific focus on populations and contexts often referred to as the “last 10%”. Together with academic and colleagues working in the field, Kai focuses on fusing individual level and structural analyses to describe and reduce HIV risks, and improve mental health and general well-being among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men and transgender individuals in a range of HIV epidemic settings.
