Today we mourn the loss of Dr. Kawango, a dedicated and active chair of International Workshop on HIV & Adolescence of the 2019 edition in Kenya. Her passionate advocate for HIV prevention and the empowerment of young people will be fondly remembered.

Biography

Dr. Kawango is a Kenyan research scientist. She obtained her PhD and MPH from the University of  Washington, Seattle, and proceeded to coordinate the trial on medical male circumcision for HIV prevention at the Kisumu site in Kenya. Under the auspices of Impact Research and Development Organization, which she founded and is directing, Kawango has implemented multiple HIV prevention programs with adolescents and young people (AYP) since 2004, including Tuungane Youth, DREAMS, VMMC, HIV Testing and Counseling, young key populations, among others. Additionally, she has conducted/is conducting several research studies with AYP, on: PrEP, HIV self-testing, multi-purpose technologies, among others. Dr. Kawango also founded Nyanza Initiative for Girls Education and Empowerment, which raises funds to return to school girls who dropped out due to pregnancy, early marriage or female genital mutilation.
