L. Jean Patterson obtained a B.S. in Zoology, 1982, from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio. Received a PhD in Medical Microbiology and Immunology from The Ohio State University, Wexner Center for Pediatric Research at Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio in 1992. Studied virology/immunology and the role humoral immune pressure plays in the high rate of genetic variation observed among Rhinoviruses. From 1993-1999 was a National Research Council Research Awardee at the Center for Biologics Research at the FDA with Dr. Ira Berkower developing novel HIV envelope expression constructs and later received an Intramural Research Training Award at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Vaccine Branch, working on development of a replicating Adenovirus/SIV vaccine in the non-human primate model of AIDS with Dr. Marjorie Robert-Guroff. In 2000, was promoted to a Research Fellow and then an NCI Staff Scientist in the Vaccine Branch, where continued to work on HIV/SIV vaccine development, publishing roughly 40 peer reviewed scientific articles, chapters and reviews, served as a journal reviewer and presented at numerous national and international meetings. In 2012, was recruited by Dr. Bonnie Mathieson to join the Office of AIDS Research (OAR) as a Health Scientist Administrator on the HIV/AIDS Vaccine Coordinating Committee in order to aid in review, planning and establishment of scientific and budget priorities for HIV vaccine research at the NIH. Planned a number of NIAID, Division of AIDS and OAR sponsored scientific workshops and served as an OAR grant reviewer on vaccine-related proposals and abstract reviewer/session chair at national/international vaccine meetings. Received numerous performance awards at the NIH, including the Fellows Award for Research Excellence, and Technology Transfer Awards at the NCI.
