Maia Butsashvili, MD, MS, PhD, received her PhD from School of Public Health, State University of New York (SUNY) in 2010. Previously she received her master’s degree in epidemiology of infectious diseases at SUNY (2000) and the degree of medical doctor at Tbilisi State Medical University (1993). Currently she is infectious diseases physician; Director of research NGO “Health Research Union”; Professor at Georgian-American University and the member of National Hepatitis C Committee, working on HCV elimination program in Georgia. She was clinical consultant of State Program of HCV treatment and prevention in prisons.
In 2010-2012 Dr. Butsashvili was Deputy Director of National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC). She is/was PI or director of different research projects, such as: Estimating the health care associated risk of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among Georgian women (Rustaveli foundation); Public health impact of couple oriented HIV counseling among pregnant women (funded by French ANRS); Influence of immunogenetic factors on the course of hepatitis C virus infection (Georgian National Science Foundation - GNSF); Prevention of mother to child HIV transmission in Georgia (Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS foundation); Prevalence and awareness of blood borne infections among health care workers in Georgia (CRDF); Prevalence and awareness of human papillomavirus infection among reproductive aged women in Georgia (GNSF); Health care associated infections in obstetrics and gynecology settings in Georgia (NATO) etc.
Dr. Butsashvili is the author of several book chapters and 41 peer-reviewed publications
