Biography

Márcio de Figueiredo Fernandes obtained his MD from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil, in 1997. He trained in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at Hospital Universitário Clementino Fraga Filho (HUCFF-UFRJ) from 1998 to 2003, and since then has been actively involved in HIV/AIDS care and research, as well as Tropical Diseases.

Dr. Márcio Fernandes has participated in in the research team of several trials issuing antirretroviral therapy, HIV vaccines, and other infectious diseases at Projeto Praça Onze (UFRJ), Rio de Janeiro/Brazil. He also works as a HIV/AIDS and Tropical Diseases Attending Physician at Instituto de Atenção à Saúde São Francisco de Assis (HESFA-UFRJ), and at ONCOHIV – Serviços Médicos Especializados (private office). Dr. Fernandes is a reference Physician from the Brazilian Network for Drug Resistance (Ministry of Health/Brazil), and an active member of the International AIDS Society, as well as the ‘HIV Resistance Committee’, from the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases.
