Martin Choo, MMedSc

Biography

Martin Choo is a global AIDS advocate based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, he has dedicated his efforts towards understanding the systemic and underlying causes for the comparatively low uptake of HIV testing and treatment in Southeast Asia, and the role of social media in the facilitation of ChemSex among gay men and other men who have sex with men. The key objective for conducting these peer-led explorations is to develop a new generation of information and intervention tools that centres and responds to the needs of people living with HIV in the region. Previously, Martin has been the Managing Director and Trustee of the Asia Pacific Council of AIDS Service Organizations, the General Manager of the Kuala Lumpur AIDS Support Services Society (KLASS), community-based researcher affiliated with the Asia Pacific Network of People with HIV (APN Plus), and consultant peer-led researcher for the staff organisation of people living with HIV in the United Nations (UN Plus). Martin has been advising the World Health Organization and UNAIDS in multiple capacities related to HIV testing, treatment and care since 2015. He has been living with HIV since 2004.
